CARBON DIOXIDE GIVES MORE THAN REFRIGERATION

Carbon dioxide is the new kid on the block when it comes to refrigeration systems. It is certainly new to
the meat industry, although its use is on the rise. And for good reason: a refrigeration system utilising carbon
dioxide is efficient, safe, does not harm the environment like traditional and synthetic refrigerants, and, best of all, is cheaper to run than other systems of similar size and scale. Michael Bellstedt of Minus4O explains.

The unexpected cherry on the top for meat processors and butchers — CO2 systems are very good at producing very
hot water whilst doing their refrigeration job, so they can replace your hot water boilers at the same time saving you even more energy costs. Great news at times of spiralling electricity and fuel costs!

So let’s talk refrigerants and the future outlook first…

Currently, most refrigeration systems used by smaller meat processors and butchers are running on synthetic refrigerants known as hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs. Made popular after the environmental backlash that happened in the late 1990s against traditional refrigerants known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), also known as Freons, HFCs seemed like a great idea at the time.

FIRST CO2 CHILLER INSTALLED IN AFRICA

Redrock Brewery Company in Johannesburg is South African based Brewery that started in early 2016, specialising in craft beers. When installing the brewery they approached CRS to install a 100% natural refrigerant-based system into the microbrewery in Linbro Park, Johannesburg.

Redrock and CRS are thrilled to have installed the first CO2 Chiller in Africa, being environmentally friendly as well highly cost effective in terms of energy efficiency.

THE NATURAL VOICE

The Natural Voice is a global call for action supported by industry and other parties that points to the environmental, economic and social potential of natural refrigerants in heating, cooling & refrigeration.

CRS endorses The Natural Voice in recognising the role to reduce direct and indirect emissions of greenhouse gases, by the role in which we play in refrigeration, heating and cooling industry. The statement to call upon the national governments to take responsibility to shape today theclimate opportunities of tomorrow and acknowledge the potential Natural Refrigerants.

ATMOSPHERE AUSTRALIA MAY: CO2 STUDIES REVEALED

CO2 Case Studies revealed for ATMOsphere Australia May 16

The ATMOsphere Board has announced the CO2 Case studies that will be presented at this years conference on the 16th May in Melbourne, Australia.

Wynand Groenewald from Commercial Refrigeration Services, will be attending as a speaker to discuss CO2 transcritical systems operating in high ambients.

CRS has worked successfully for six years to prove the efficiency of CO2 transcritical systems in a high ambient climate and with its close affiliation with Woolworths South Africa, hopes to soon bring its technology to Australian and New Zealand shores.
